HOW LONG SHOULD I STUDY?

BEGINNER 100-120 hours from 0 to level A1. I can understand and use familiar phrases and expressions needed to complete specific tasks. I can introduce myself and others, ask and answer questions about my place of residence, people I know, and my property. I can participate in simple conversation provided the other person speaks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

ELEMENTARY 180-200 hours from level A1 to level A2. I can understand simple sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of immediate concern (e.g. basic personal and family information, shopping, finding a job, etc.). I can handle simple tasks involving the exchange of information on familiar or everyday topics. I can describe in simple terms the background of myself and my immediate family and friends and the main aspects of everyday life.

INTERMEDIATE 140-180 hours from level A2 to level B1. I can understand the main points of clear standard text on a wide range of topics commonly encountered in work, study, leisure, etc. I can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst in an area where the language is spoken. I can produce simple, coherent text on topics that are familiar or of particular interest to me. I can describe impressions, events, hopes, aspirations, and give reasons for opinions and plans for the future.

UPPER- INTERMEDIATE 100-140 hours from level B1 to level B2. I can communicate spontaneously and fluently in a way that allows for regular interaction with native speakers without any strain for either party. They can understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics.

ADVANCED 280 hours from level B2 to level C1. Can understand a wide range of longer, more complex texts on a wide range of topics, recognising implicit meaning. Can express myself spontaneously and fluently, without having to search for words or expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively to communicate in my academic and professional activities. Can produce clear, detailed and well-structured text on complex topics, demonstrating control over patterns of text organisation, communication and linking of elements.

PROFICIENCY 180 hours from level C1 to level C2. I can understand almost any spoken or written message and can construct a coherent text based on several spoken and written sources. I can speak spontaneously, fluently and with a high degree of precision, emphasising shades of meaning even in the most complex situations.
